BIOGRAPHY
Safial Aqbar Zakaria is a senior lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia specialising in interior lighting design and the study of light in cultural and built environments. He holds a BSc, Master and PhD in Interior Design and maintains an active publication record. His focus is on creating lighting that is accurate, empathetic and accountable to support better design, heritage preservation and ethical user experiences.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research focuses on lighting design, the relationship between design and culture, and the principles that guide responsible design practice. I explore how light shapes spatial experience and function, how cultural values influence the way spaces are understood, and how design philosophy can support lighting that is accurate, empathetic, and accountable.
