BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Syarawi Sharoni, senior lecturer in Geophysics at Universiti Sains Malaysia, holds a BSc in Geophysics (USM), an MRes in Ocean Science (University of Southampton, UK), and a PhD in Remote Sensing (UTM). With a diverse geoscience background, he previously worked as an imaging geophysicist at Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS). Passionate about exploring Earth's natural phenomena, he advances his career in oceanography and remote sensing.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Syarawi specializes in oceanography and microwave remote sensing, studying extreme phenomena like tropical cyclones, extreme rainfall, heatwaves, and climate variations, including El Niño/La Niña, the Indian Ocean Dipole, monsoons, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, with a focus on the South China Sea. Using satellite data, MATLAB, and machine learning, his research advances understanding of ocean-atmosphere dynamics and climate science.
